I bought it on Steam and got a CD key, claimed it and left it there. If you do that, any expansions you buy must also be the windows (not Steam) versions. Eventually I just bought the windows version and made a new account, then added it to my Steam library so I can have the overlay. I was able to log in to Mogstation on both accounts but had no options to start or renew a subscription anywhere. I was never able to find any concrete answers. Again, that would be a crappy way of doing business but it's a possibility.

I think if you download the game for the free trial and don't subscribe before it ends, the CD-key becomes invalid.
